On the terrace of Four Elements Hotel Amsterdam there are chairs by Mater Design, a leading Danish brand that since 2006 has been known for its sustainable design philosophy.
Mater Design developed the innovative material Matek®, made from industrial residual flows such as plastic, wood fibers, coffee husks and even e-waste.Thanks to this technology, waste streams get a second life in top-quality furniture. In 2024, Mater moreover introduced a fully biodegradable variant of Matek®, which, like wood, can decompose naturally.
The chairs on our terrace are a tangible result of this circular thinking.
Each chair contains over 1,5 kilos of recycled material, which directly contributes to reducing plastic and e-waste.
Because of this production method, up to 1.6 kilos of CO₂ emissions are saved per chair compared to comparable furniture made from new plastic. Moreover, Mater’s Take-back program guarantees that every piece of furniture can be recycled again after many years of use.For our hotel, this is more than a design choice. It is a story we wish to share with our guests: sustainable entrepreneurship does not have to be a compromise, it can precisely become a source of beauty and innovation.
